We know that emergencies can happen when you least expect them. Our program, Rosco’s Keep Them Home, offers a lifeline for pets and their families during these unexpected moments. Whether it’s an accident or an unforeseen medical crisis, we’re here to help eligible pets receive the care they need.

To qualify, pets must have a strong history of regular veterinary care, including routine exams and vaccinations. The current medical issue must be due to an emergency beyond the owner’s control, and the Calgary Humane Society carefully reviews each case to determine eligibility. Our veterinary team fully assesses the animal to determine appropriate medical treatment and/or surgical intervention.  If treatment is possible, the animal is treated, supported through recovery, and returned to their home provided they are eligible based on program requirements.

Please note: This program is not open for direct applications. Instead, participants are identified and approved by the Calgary Humane Society, ensuring that help reaches those in genuine need.

At the Calgary Humane Society, your pet’s well-being is our priority. With Rosco’s Keep Them Home, we aim to reunite pets with their families and offer peace of mind when it’s needed most.

At Calgary Humane Society, we are dedicated to promoting responsible pet ownership and ensuring that every pet can remain in the loving home where they belong. Understanding the challenges that low-income pet owners face, our Wellness Clinics are designed to provide essential vaccination and spay/neuter services, making it easier for families to care for their beloved animal companions without financial strain.

Through these clinics, we aim to enhance the well-being of animals while supporting their owners in maintaining a healthy and happy home environment. By offering these critical services, we help prevent unwanted litters, protect animals from preventable diseases, and strengthen the bond between companion animals and their families.

Low income pet owners who wish to take advantage of these services are encouraged to apply online. Applications are available in advance of our scheduled clinics, allowing us to prioritize those in need and ensure that our resources are allocated where they can make the most significant impact.

Our goal is simple: to keep animals with the families who love them, while fostering a community that values and practices responsible pet ownership.

Calgary Humane Society’s Emergency Boarding Program provides a safe haven for animals when their families are displaced due to a crisis. In the event of an emergency, you can trust that your animal will receive the care they need through our dedicated services.

This program is designed for individuals who temporarily cannot care for their animal due to circumstances such as:

  • Loss of housing due to fire, flooding, or other natural disasters
  • Sudden hospitalization
  • Entry into a recovery program or rehab center, subject to individual circumstances

Emergency Boarding is available for those who cannot access support from family, friends, or other boarding services in Calgary. A referral from a recognized service agency or professional, such as a social worker or disaster response worker (EMS, firefighter, or police officer), is required. Boarding will be offered for 10 days.

For more information or to access Emergency Boarding, please contact us at 403-723-6025 or email found@calgaryhumane.ca.

No one should have to stay in a dangerous situation out of concern for the safety of a loved one, including companion animals. Calgary Humane Society’s Pet Safekeeping Program ensures that both you and your animal can escape domestic violence safely.

This program provides confidential boarding for your animal while you seek safety, giving you peace of mind knowing that your information and your animal’s well-being are protected.

A referral from a recognized service agency or professional, such as a social worker, is required. Boarding will be offered for 21 days.

Surrendering an animal

Sometimes the bravest choice is to give them a chance at a fresh start.

Calgary Humane Society is here to support you and your animal, including when it’s time to consider surrender. We will work with you to ensure this is the right choice, exhausting all other options first.

How to surrender an animal:

Calgary Humane Society’s Community Services offer tailored resources to address the most pressing and common challenges in pet ownership. With options for access to care, behavioural support, and emergency boarding, we aim to provide you with the tools necessary to maintain your pet responsibly.

We encourage you to explore these options before considering surrender.

For assistance, please contact us at 403-205-4455 or email general.inquiries@calgaryhumane.ca.

If surrendering your pet is the only option left, please complete the Surrender Intake Form. Our team will review your request and place your animal on a waitlist based on their needs and our capacity. You’ll need to provide detailed information about your pet’s history and personality to help us ensure their well-being. Surrenders are managed by appointment only, and we’ll keep you updated on when we can schedule your intake.

Please note that if you arrive without an appointment, you will be asked to schedule one.

For help with the Surrender Intake Form, contact us at 403-723-6025 or email found@calgaryhumane.ca.

If your animal needs immediate medical attention, call us right away at 403-205-4455.

We manage intakes through a triaged waitlist to ensure we have the space and staff to care for every animal properly. This approach reduces crowding, minimizes the risk of disease, and helps animals move to the adoption floor more quickly. While we are an open admissions shelter, planning our intakes allows us to provide the best care for each animal and support more animals in need.

Our Community Services team will contact you when we’re ready to receive your animal. If you miss our call, please return it by the deadline to schedule your appointment. Missing your appointment without notice may result in being placed back on the waitlist.

We understand that surrendering a pet is a difficult decision. Our compassionate staff will guide you through the process, collecting vital information for future adopters while respecting your privacy. You’ll need to provide ID and bring your animal in a hand-held kennel (for smaller animals and cats) or on a leash (for dogs).

While there’s no mandatory fee to surrender, we do incur costs for their care. We hope you’ll consider contributing financially if you can. Donations of food, crates, carriers, and other supplies are also greatly appreciated and help us care for the over 5,000 animals we receive each year.

Your animal will receive top-quality care during their stay with us. Our veterinary clinic will provide health exams and any necessary medical treatment. Our animal care team ensures they are comfortable, while our behaviour team addresses any issues. When they are ready for adoption, we carefully screen potential adopters to find the best match.
