The Calgary Humane Society offer a wide range of training & educational resources to assist companion animal guardians in our community.
Whether you’re seeking group training sessions, one-on-one consultations with our experts, or informative handouts, we provide the tools you need to deepen your understanding of animal behaviour. Using positive reinforcement-based training methods, our programs are designed to educate and empower, giving you the skills and knowledge to support your animal’s behaviour both at home and in the community.
Attend our Training Classes
At the Calgary Humane Society, our dog training classes are designed to foster strong, positive relationships between you and your canine companion. Led by experienced and accredited trainers with a deep passion for animal welfare, our classes emphasize kindness and science-based methods to help your dog learn essential skills in a fun and supportive environment.
Whether you’re working on basic manners or addressing specific behavioural challenges, our programs are tailored to meet the unique needs of every dog and owner, ensuring a rewarding experience for both. Join us to discover how humane training can lead to a well-mannered, happy dog and a more harmonious home.
Unless otherwise stated, all classes will run for 6 weeks total. Dogs must be vaccinated and safe to be around other animals.
Puppy Club at the Calgary Humane Society is the perfect start for your puppy, focusing on early socialization and foundational skills to ensure a happy, well-adjusted life. Our expert trainers guide your puppy through positive interactions and essential training exercises, laying the groundwork for a successful life together. Join us to give your puppy the best possible start on their journey to becoming a confident and well-behaved companion.
Smarty Pups is a group training class for dogs aged 16 weeks and up. This class focuses on essential skills like reliable recall, loose leash walking, and “leave it,” using positive reinforcement to create a strong bond between you and your dog. Whether you’re starting with a new puppy or refining your older dog’s manners, Smarty Pups will help your dog become well-behaved and confident.
Polite Pooches is an advanced group training class for dogs who have completed Smarty Pups or a basic obedience class elsewhere. This class focuses on refining foundational skills like recall and loose leash walking, helping your dog stay focused and well-behaved around distractions. Perfect for well-mannered dogs ready to sharpen their abilities, Polite Pooches ensures your dog thrives in real-world situations. Please note this class is not suitable for reactive dogs.
Scent Hounds is a 3-week course designed to harness the incredible power of your dog’s nose, providing valuable enrichment and stimulation. Ideal for older dogs, high-arousal dogs, and nervous dogs, this class encourages movement, mental engagement, and confidence-building through scent work activities. Whether your dog is eager for more enrichment or needs a boost in confidence, Scent Hounds offers a fun and rewarding experience that taps into their natural instincts.
Reactive Rover is a specialized 7 week class for dogs who bark, lunge, or growl at other dogs while on leash. Through targeted techniques, this class allows you to learn to manage and modify your dog’s reactive behaviours, building their confidence and improving your walks together. While the focus is on dog-to-dog reactivity, the skills learned can be applied to other triggers as well. The first class will be handlers only. Please note, Reactive Rover is not suitable for dogs with human-directed aggression or resource guarding issues. If you are experiencing these issues please register for a private consultation.
Fearful Fido is a specialized class for dogs who tend to choose flight over fight, feeling nervous around new places, people, and experiences. This class is designed to help both handlers and their dogs build confidence in challenging situations, using positive reinforcement techniques to gradually ease fears and encourage bravery. If your dog struggles with shyness or anxiety, Fearful Fido offers a supportive environment to help them grow more comfortable and confident in the world around them.
At Calgary Humane Society, we offer personalized private consultations to help address your cat or dog’s specific behavioural concerns.Whether you prefer the convenience of an in-home visit or the focused environment of our facility, our experienced trainers use positive reinforcement techniques to create effective, lasting solutions.
We work with you to address issues such as jumping, reactivity, resource guarding, separation anxiety, house training, and more. Each consultation is tailored to meet the unique needs of you and your animal, ensuring a compassionate approach that strengthens your bond while resolving behavioural challenges.

Community Seminars
Calgary Humane Society offers a diverse range of community seminars designed to educate and empower both animal guardians and professionals.
Our offerings include professional development opportunities for trainers, behaviour consultants, and others who work with animals, complete with continuing education credits to support your career growth.
